Nepal and Canada have enjoyed friendly bilateral relations since 1965. Canada is seen as an attractive study destination by Nepalese students due to several key factors:
- High-quality education system with some of the top-ranked universities in the world
- Opportunity to gain international exposure and perspective
- Potential for employment and permanent residency after graduation
- A multicultural society with large Nepali diaspora communities
- Safe and peaceful environment conducive to studying
The number of Nepalese students opting for studies in Canada has grown substantially in recent years. To study in Canada as an international student, a study permit issued by the Canadian government is required. This permit allows enrolled students to pursue academic programs at designated Canadian learning institutions.
Obtaining the study permit involves meeting eligibility criteria, preparing various documents, undergoing medical checks, appearing for visa interviews, and more. Here is a step-by-step guide on the entire process for Nepalese students to acquire their Canadian study visa successfully.
Eligibility Criteria
Before you apply for a study permit, it is crucial to ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria set by the Canadian government:
Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution:
You must have received an unconditional letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. DLIs refer to schools that the Canadian government specifically approves to host international students. This includes:
- Public universities and colleges
- Private academic schools
- Technical and vocational training institutions
- Language schools
The acceptance letter must be printed on the official letterhead of the institution and should clearly specify details like your full name, accepted program of study, start and end dates of the program, duration of the program, and tuition fees. Conditional acceptance letters will not be accepted.
Valid Passport:
To apply for a Canadian study permit, Nepalese students need a valid passport issued by the Government of Nepal. It is strongly recommended that your passport be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you plan to submit the study permit application.
Proof of Financial Support:
One of the most crucial eligibility requirements is providing proof of sufficient financial capacity. Students need to demonstrate they have the required funding to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and other costs for the first year of studies in Canada.
The minimum financial capacity to be shown is CAD $10,000 to $15,000 for the first year, in addition to tuition fees. The exact amount varies based on which Canadian province and city the student intends to study in, as the cost of living differs across cities and regions.
You need to provide detailed proof of your financial ability, such as:
- Bank statements in your name or your sponsor’s showing the required amount in savings
- or Education loan approval letter
- Affidavit of Support letter from parents/sponsors committing to support your expenses
- Scholarship award letters (if applicable)
Good Health:
To study in Canada, you must be healthy and not suffer from any contagious medical conditions. You must undergo a medical examination from a panel physician approved by the Canadian government. These medical reports will be submitted along with your visa application to prove you meet the health standards required.
No Criminal Record:
You must provide a police certificate from Nepal stating that you have no criminal record and are deemed admissible to Canada. This shows that you have good character. Any issue shown on your police verification can negatively impact your study permit application.
Genuine Student:
In your visa application and interview, you must convince the Canadian visa officer that you are a genuine student. You need to demonstrate that you do not have any immigration intent and will exit Canada after completing your program within the validity of your study permit. Having strong ties to home will help prove this.
