TOEFL iBT is an English language proficiency test that is administered by the ETS via the internet to students opting to study in English speaking countries. TOEFL is a requirement for university admissions in USA and other English-speaking countries to meet the English language proficiency requirement. The requirements differ from one university/program to another. Please make sure you check the admission requirements before you apply.

TOEFL measures if a student is a competent user of English in all aspects. The areas tested in the test are listed below:

    Nearly all universities/colleges and institutions in the world accept and prefer TOEFL iBT as evidence of international students’ English proficiency.     Reading Section:

    Reading in iBT tests your ability to read and understand the materials used in academic institutions. You will have 4 or 5 passages with 10 questions per passage. You have 54 to 72 minutes to answer all the questions. Reading passages are taken from university/college-level study materials.

    Listening Section:

    Listening in iBT TOEFL measures your ability to understand conversations and lectures used in a university/college classroom. You have 3-4 lectures, each 3-5 minutes long, with 6 questions per lecture. You have 2/3 conversations with 2 speakers, each 3 minutes long, with 5 questions per conversation. You are allowed to take notes. The time allotted for Listening Section is 41 to 57 minutes.

    Speaking Section:

    This section measures your ability to speak English effectively in university/college settings. You have 4 tasks to complete in 17 minutes.

    Question 1: Independent Speaking Task

    You can express your ideas/views as a response.

    Questions 2-4: Integrated Speaking Tasks:

    You need to combine Listening and Speaking, or Listening, reading and Speaking. Your responses are 45 or 60 seconds long, which are recorded and transmitted to ETS.

    Writing Section:

    It measures your ability to write in English in an academic setting. Your writing needs to be clear and well-organized.

    You have 2 tasks to complete:

    1. Integrated Writing Task: 20 minutes

    You need to write a response after reading a short passage and listening to a short lecture.

    2. Independent Writing Task: 30 minutes

    You need to write an essay on the given topic based on your personal experience or opinion.
