SAT Preparation in Nepal 2026: Dates, Fee & Study Plan

Last updated: 16 October 2026

Quick answer

SAT preparation in Nepal starts with three things: knowing the Digital SAT format, booking a test date at a Nepal test centre through College Board, and following a steady study plan. The SAT is a computer-based test of Reading & Writing and Math, scored from 400 to 1600, that many US universities use for admission and merit scholarships. Most Nepali students need about 2 to 4 months of focused preparation, using official practice tests in College Board’s Bluebook app, regular timed mocks and careful review of every mistake.

Planning a Bachelor’s degree in the USA? For many Nepali students, the SAT is the test that opens the door to competitive universities and merit scholarships. This guide covers everything you need for SAT preparation in Nepal in one place: what the exam is, the current Digital SAT format, upcoming test dates, the exam fee, how to register, and a practical study plan you can start this week.

01

What is the SAT? (SAT meaning in Nepali)

The SAT is a standardised admission test run by College Board, a US non-profit organisation. US colleges and universities use it to compare applicants from different school systems, including students with NEB +2, A Levels or other qualifications.

The name originally stood for “Scholastic Aptitude Test”, but today it is officially just “SAT”. Students usually take it in Class 11, Class 12 or their gap year, about a year before their intended US intake.

02

Digital SAT format: sections, timing and scoring

The SAT is now fully digital. You take it at a test centre on College Board’s Bluebook app, using your own laptop or tablet or a device borrowed from College Board.

SectionModulesTimeScore
Reading & Writing2 modules64 minutes200–800
Math2 modules70 minutes200–800
Total4 modules2 hr 14 min (plus a 10-minute break)400–1600
  • Adaptive testing: how well you do in the first module of each section decides how hard the second module is.
  • Short reading passages: each Reading & Writing question has its own short passage, not long articles.
  • Calculator allowed on all of Math: the Bluebook app includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator.

SAT exam dates in Nepal 2026–27

International SAT dates, including Nepal, for the 2026–27 testing year as published by College Board:

Test dateRegistration deadlineLate deadline
7 Nov 202623 Oct 202627 Oct 2026
5 Dec 202620 Nov 202624 Nov 2026
6 Mar 202719 Feb 202723 Feb 2027
1 May 202716 Apr 202720 Apr 2027
5 Jun 202721 May 202725 May 2027

Deadlines close at 11:59 p.m. US Eastern Time, which is the next morning in Nepal. Seats at Nepal test centres can fill up, so register early. If you need to borrow a device, request it at least 30 days before test day.

Which date should you choose?

For Fall 2027 entry, aim for the November or December 2026 test. That leaves time for a second attempt in March 2027 if needed. Early Decision and Early Action applicants usually need scores by the November test.

SAT exam fee in Nepal and how to register

FeeAmount (US$)
SAT registration68
International regional fee43
Total for students in Nepal111
Change of test date or centre34

The fee is paid online in US dollars, usually with an international or dollar card. The registration fee includes four free score reports to universities, if you choose them by College Board’s deadline. Late registration and extra score reports cost more, so check the current amounts on College Board before you pay.

How to register for the SAT from Nepal

  • Step 1: Create a free College Board account using your name exactly as it appears on your passport.
  • Step 2: Fill in your profile and upload a clear photo.
  • Step 3: Choose a test date and a test centre in Nepal.
  • Step 4: Pay the fee and download your admission ticket.
  • Step 5: Install Bluebook on your device and complete the exam setup before test day.

Bring your valid passport on test day. It is the accepted ID for international test takers.

05

Is the SAT required for US universities?

It depends on the university. Many US universities are still test-optional. However, a growing number of selective universities, including MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Dartmouth and Brown, now require SAT or ACT scores again. For Nepali students, a strong score also helps in three practical ways:

  • It gives admissions officers a common benchmark next to your NEB or A Level grades.
  • Many universities use it for merit scholarship decisions, even when admission is test-optional.
  • It can strengthen your overall profile, which also helps at the F-1 visa stage.

Always check each university’s current testing policy before deciding whether to submit a score.

06

SAT preparation in Nepal: a 3-month study plan

This plan works for most Class 12 and +2 graduates studying around 1.5 to 2 hours a day. Start with a full practice test in Bluebook so you know your baseline score.

WeeksFocus
1–2Diagnostic test; learn the format, question types and Desmos calculator
3–6Concept building: algebra, advanced math, grammar rules, reading strategies
7–10Timed section practice; one full mock test every week
11–12Full mocks under real conditions; review mistakes; rest before test day

Daily routine: 45 minutes of Math, 45 minutes of Reading & Writing and 30 minutes reviewing errors. Keep an error log. Most score gains come from fixing repeated mistakes, not from doing more questions.

Common mistakes Nepali students make

  • Using old paper-based SAT books instead of digital-format practice
  • Skipping timed practice, then running out of time in Reading & Writing
  • Not learning the Desmos calculator, which saves time in Math
  • Taking mocks without reviewing them
  • Starting too late to allow a second attempt before deadlines
07

Best SAT preparation resources and books

  • Bluebook practice tests (free): full-length adaptive tests from College Board, and the closest thing to the real exam.
  • Khan Academy Official Digital SAT Prep (free): skill practice built with College Board.
  • The Official Digital SAT Study Guide: College Board’s own book.
  • Erica Meltzer’s Digital SAT books: strong for grammar and reading.
  • Kaplan and Princeton Review Digital SAT prep: useful for extra practice questions.

Make sure any book you buy in Kathmandu is the digital SAT edition. Older editions follow the retired paper format.

08

What is a good SAT score?

ScoreWhat it generally means
1450–1600Competitive for highly selective universities and top merit awards
1300–1440Strong for many good universities and merit scholarships
1100–1290Suitable for a wide range of US universities

A “good” score depends on your target list. Compare your score with the middle 50% range that each university publishes. Scholarships also depend on grades, essays and activities, so a high score helps but does not guarantee an award.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Students in Nepal pay US$111: the US$68 registration fee plus a US$43 international regional fee. Changing your test date or centre costs US$34. Check College Board for current late and extra score report fees.
Yes. The SAT is offered at authorised test centres in Nepal on international test dates. You choose your centre when registering on the College Board website.
Upcoming 2026–27 international dates are 7 November 2026, 5 December 2026, 6 March 2027, 1 May 2027 and 5 June 2027. Registration closes about two weeks before each test.
Most students need 2 to 4 months of regular study. Students starting from a lower baseline, or aiming for 1450+, may need longer.
Not for all. Many universities are test-optional, but several selective universities now require SAT or ACT scores again, and many use scores for merit scholarships. Check each university’s policy.
There is no fixed limit. Many students take it two or three times, and many universities consider your highest scores.
Scores of 1300 and above are often competitive for merit scholarships, and 1450+ for highly selective universities. Awards also depend on grades, essays and activities, so no score guarantees a scholarship.
