Study in the USA From Nepal: List of Requirements

Discover the essential study requirements in the USA with our concise list. Ensure a smooth application process with key prerequisites for your academic journey.

For Nepali students looking to study in the United States, the process involves meeting university admission requirements, obtaining a student visa, and considering other costs and planning. With proper preparation and understanding of the steps, studying at an American college or university can be an achievable goal.

University Admission Requirements

Gaining admission to US universities as an international student involves submitting various application materials, including:

Choose Program and University

Research into different programs and universities to find the right match for your academic and career plans. know about the program, university, where it’s located, how much it costs, and if there are scholarships available.

Completed Application Form

After finalizing the university you’ll need to complete an application form for each university you are applying to, either through the Common Application portal or the university’s own application system. Forms gather background information and academic history.

Official Academic Transcripts

Official transcripts of your high school or post-secondary education need to be submitted. These transcripts should contain information about the courses you completed and the grades you obtained in each course. Transcripts need to be translated if not originally in English.

Standardized Test Scores

• Undergraduate programs: For Bachelor’s degree applicants, submitting SAT or ACT test scores may be required at some universities.

• Graduate programs: Applying for a Master’s or Ph.D may requires taking standardized tests like the GRE, GMAT or LSAT, depending on the program.

Competitive scores in these tests help in positive admission outcome. It is essential to check the specific requirements of each university you are applying to.

Statement of Purpose (SOP)

statement of purpose

The admissions essay or personal statement summarizes academic and professional goals, reasons for applying, skills and abilities. This 1-2 page SOP plays a big role in determining fit for the university. You should check if the university you’re interested in requires a Statement of Purpose (SOP) for admission. If they do, there might be specific rules or guidelines you need to follow when writing it.

Letters of Recommendation

Most universities require 2-3 Letter of Recommendation vouching for the applicant’s qualities and likelihood of succeeding in the academic program. Letters should come from teachers, school administrators or employers.

Proof of English Proficiency

Non-native speakers need to demonstrate English fluency with tests like TOEFL or IELTS and achieve target exam scores set by each university. This ensures you can keep up with the lectures and assignments, which are all in English.

Student Visa Requirements

Nepali citizens need a non-immigrant student visa to study in the United States. Key requirements when applying include:

I-20 Certificate: Once accepted at a US university, they will issue this Certificate of Eligibility confirming your admission status for visa application. The I-20 form outlines the program of study, estimated costs, and other relevant details for the student’s academic program in the USA.

Valid Passport: You must have a passport valid at least 6 months into the future when applying for a student visa and entering the country. It should have at least 2 blank pages.

Form DS-160: This form gathers biographical, academic and work data. It must be completed online as part of the visa application.

Visa Interview: After booking an interview slot, you will attend an in-person visa interview at the US Embassy in Nepal. During the interview, consular officers will determine if you’re eligible to study in the USA.

Additional Considerations

Beyond admission and visa requisites, students should consider university application deadlines and the costs associated with their studies:

Application Deadlines

Application due dates for international students may vary by program and institution. There are early deadlines around November-December, regular deadlines in January-February, and some schools accept applications on a rolling basis. You need to keep track of these dates so you do not miss the chance to apply.

Scholarship Opportunities

Scholarship Opportunity

There are various university and external scholarships students can apply for to help fund studies. Examples include Fulbright, Study USA Connect, and Education USA scholarships.

Gaining acceptance to study in the United States as a Nepali student involves coordinating university applications, student visa complexity, and costs.

However, American universities provide world-class education and intercultural experiences that are well worth the investment for many students. With careful planning and staying organized, getting approval to study in the US is achievable.
