Graduate Route Deadline: Apply Before January 2027 or Lose 6 Months of Your UK Post-Study Work Visa

If you are a Nepali student studying in the UK or planning to begin your studies soon, there is an important immigration change you cannot afford to ignore.

The UK Government has confirmed that the Graduate Route visa for bachelor’s and master’s graduates will be reduced from two years to 18 months for applications submitted on or after 1 January 2027. Students who submit a successful Graduate Route application before 1 January 2027 will continue to receive two years (24 months) of permission to stay in the UK. PhD and other doctoral graduates will continue to receive three years. This change has been confirmed in the UK’s Immigration Rules and Home Office guidance.

For many current master’s students, this creates a genuine deadline. The timing of your Graduate Route application could determine whether you receive 24 months or only 18 months to work or look for work in the UK after graduation.

The Graduate Route, commonly known as the Post Study Work (PSW) Visa, allows eligible international students to remain in the UK after successfully completing an approved degree. Unlike a Skilled Worker visa, the Graduate Route does not require employer sponsorship. It gives graduates the flexibility to:

“PhD students are also affected.”
No. The three-year Graduate Route for PhD and other doctoral graduates remains unchanged.
