Australia Visa Success Rate from Nepal in 2026: Latest Student Visa Data

Last updated: 20 October 2026, based on the latest published Department of Home Affairs data
The Australia visa success rate from Nepal for student visas has fallen sharply. Since Nepal moved to Evidence Level 3, applications from Nepal face the closest checks, and far fewer offshore applications are approved than in previous years. Vocational (VET) applications are refused far more often than university applications. A visa is still achievable for genuine students who choose a logical course at a reputable university, show clearly sourced funds and write a strong Genuine Student statement. The latest dated figures are in the table below.
If you are planning to study in Australia, the first question is usually: what is the current visa rate from Nepal? The honest answer is that it has dropped a lot since late 2025. The averages also hide big differences between course types. This guide uses Department of Home Affairs data to show where the numbers stand, why they changed and what you can do to give your application the best chance.
Australia visa success rate from Nepal: latest data
| Period | Applicants | Grant rate |
|---|---|---|
| Jan–May 2025 | Nepali, offshore | ~89% (7,167 of 8,028) |
| FY 2025–26 (Jul 2025–Jun 2026) | Nepali, all applicants | 65.9% |
| FY 2025–26 | Nepali, offshore | ~52% |
| Jan–May 2026 | Nepali, offshore | ~36% (about 2,700 of 7,500) |
| Jan–May 2026 | Nepali, offshore VET | ~10% (56 of 549) |
| FY 2025–26 | All countries | 78.2% |
“Offshore” means applications made from outside Australia, which is how most new students apply from Nepal. “All applicants” also includes students already in Australia applying for another visa, and their grant rate is generally higher.
Home Affairs publishes student visa grant rates on data.gov.au, and the department describes the figures as provisional. Monthly rates move up and down, and different analyses of the same data can differ by a few percentage points. Use these figures as a guide to the trend, not a prediction for any one application.
Australia student visa success rate by course type
The type of course you choose makes a large difference. Based on analyses of Home Affairs data for offshore Nepali applicants from January to May 2026:
| Sector | Monthly grant rate range |
|---|---|
| Higher education (Bachelor’s, Master’s) | About 27–40% |
| Postgraduate research (PhD, research Master’s) | About 33–63% |
| VET (diploma, certificate) | About 2–11% |
The message is clear. For most Nepali students today, a well-chosen university degree that fits your previous studies is a far stronger application than a VET course.
Why has the Australia visa rate from Nepal fallen?
- Evidence Level 3: Nepal moved back to the highest-scrutiny level in January 2026, so financial and English evidence is checked closely.
- Migration targets: the government is working to reduce net overseas migration, and student numbers are managed through a yearly planning level.
- Crackdown on non-genuine study: course-hopping, low-quality providers and VET pathways used mainly to stay in Australia are under heavy scrutiny.
- Tighter Genuine Student assessment: officers look closely at whether your course, provider and career plan make sense together.
Australia also announced further student visa reforms in September 2026, including limits on bringing dependants. These raise the bar for well-planned, genuine applications.

Book a free consultationCommon reasons Nepali student visas are refused
- Weak Genuine Student statement: a generic or copied statement that does not explain why this course, this provider and Australia.
- Unclear funds: large recent deposits, loans without a clear repayment plan, or sponsor income that does not match the amount shown.
- Illogical course choice: a course that does not build on your previous study or work, or a step down in level.
- Long study gaps without explanation.
- Provider risk: applying to a provider with a poor compliance record.
- Inconsistent documents: details that do not match across forms, transcripts and financial papers.
How to improve your Australia visa success rate
- Choose a logical course: it should be a step up from your current qualification and connected to your career goals.
- Pick a reputable university: check the provider’s track record and your Evidence Level combination in the Home Affairs Document Checklist Tool.
- Show clean, explained funds: savings held over time, a documented source of income and complete sponsor evidence.
- Write your own Genuine Student statement: specific, honest and consistent with your documents.
- Score well in English: a strong IELTS or PTE result reduces doubt about your readiness.
- Explain every gap: work, training or family reasons, with evidence.
A refusal is not permanent. Offshore student visa refusals generally cannot be appealed, but you can reapply once you have fixed the issues the refusal letter identifies.
Work, visitor and skilled visas from Nepal
Home Affairs does not publish country-specific grant rates for most other visa types in the same way, so treat any “success rate” you see online for these with caution.
| Visa | Who it is for |
|---|---|
| Skills in Demand (subclass 482) | Workers sponsored by an approved Australian employer |
| Skilled Independent (189) / Nominated (190) | Permanent skilled migration through the points test and an invitation |
| Visitor (600) | Tourism or family visits; you must show you will return to Nepal |
| Partner (309/100, 820/801) | Partners of Australian citizens or permanent residents |
Be careful with “guaranteed work visa” offers. Genuine employer sponsorship never needs a large upfront payment to an agent.
