If you are planning to study in the UK from Nepal in 2026, several important changes to the visa process, fees, and post-study work rights will directly affect your application and budget. This guide walks you through the UK visa types, the full step-by-step process from Nepal, and every recent update — with exact costs Nepali students need to plan for.

01

Types of UK visa for Nepalese students

Before looking at fees and the latest changes, confirm which UK visa fits your plan. Most Nepali students need the Student visa (Student Route), but the length and type of your course decides which route applies.

Visa typeWho it is forCourse lengthKey points
Student visa (Student Route)Bachelor's, master's, PhD, foundation & pathway students aged 16+6 months or longerThe main route for Nepali students. Needs a CAS, proof of funds, English evidence and a TB test. Allows part-time work in term.
Short-term Study visaStudents on an English language course only6 to 11 monthsFor English language courses over 6 months. No work, cannot be extended.
Standard Visitor visaStudents on a short course or programmeUp to 6 monthsShort courses, summer schools or exams. No work and no path to stay on.
Child Student visaPupils aged 4–17 at an independent fee-paying schoolVaries by schoolRarely used from Nepal. Ages 16–17 may choose this or the Student visa.
Graduate visa (Graduate Route)Students who complete an eligible UK degreePost-study stayApplied for from inside the UK after you finish. See the Graduate Route section for timings.

Which UK visa do most Nepali students need? If you are heading to a UK university for a bachelor's, master's or PhD, the Student visa is almost always correct. The short-term and visitor options only suit brief or language-only programmes and do not lead to post-study work. Choosing the right route at the outset keeps your CAS, your funds and your application aligned — exactly what a UK visa officer looks for.

02

UK student visa process from Nepal: step by step

The UK student visa process from Nepal looks long at first, but it moves smoothly when you take it one stage at a time. Here is the full journey, in the order it actually happens for Nepali applicants:

  • Step 1 — Prove your English: Most universities accept IELTS for UKVI, PTE or an equivalent. Some accept a Medium of Instruction letter or their own assessment, so check your course requirements first.
  • Step 2 — Choose your course and apply: Shortlist well-matched universities and courses, then apply directly or through your counsellor.
  • Step 3 — Receive and accept your offer: Review the conditions, accept, and pay any required tuition deposit — this usually needs to clear before your CAS is issued.
  • Step 4 — Pass the pre-CAS interview: Nepal is on the list of countries where many universities require a pre-CAS credibility interview before issuing a CAS. Expect questions on your course, finances and future plans. Answer in your own words, based on your own research.
  • Step 5 — Get your CAS: Once conditions and any interview are cleared, the university issues your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). This unique number is required for your visa.
  • Step 6 — Take your TB test: Applicants staying 6 months or more must test at a UKVI-approved clinic, such as the IOM Migration Health Assessment Centre in Kathmandu or the centre in Damak, Jhapa. The certificate is valid for 6 months — book early during the June–October peak.
  • Step 7 — Prepare your finances: Hold your tuition plus living costs for 28 consecutive days (the 28-day rule — see the financial requirements section below).
  • Step 8 — Apply online and pay the fees: Complete the Student visa application on GOV.UK, paying the £558 visa fee and the IHS (£776/year). Keep your IHS reference safe.
  • Step 9 — Give your biometrics at VFS: Book a VFS Global Kathmandu appointment and carry all original documents (see the VFS process section below for exactly how this now works).
  • Step 10 — Receive your decision and eVisa: The UK now issues a digital visa (eVisa) linked to your passport through a UKVI account, rather than a sticker or BRP card. Check every detail matches your passport, then book your travel.

Start early. Most delays happen not because the process is unclear, but because financial evidence and the TB test take longer to arrange than students expect. For a September intake, begin your visa preparation by June or July.

03

UK student visa fee increase from April 2026

From 8 April 2026, the UK Home Office increased visa application fees across all immigration routes by approximately 6.5%. Here are the changes affecting Nepali students:

Visa TypeOld FeeNew Fee (from 8 April)IncreaseApprox. NPR
Student visa£524£558+£34~NPR 97,000
Dependant visa£524£558+£34~NPR 97,000
Graduate Route£880£937+£57~NPR 1,63,000
Short-term student£214£228+£14~NPR 39,700
Child student£524£558+£34~NPR 97,000

Key point: The fee is determined by your application submission date, not your course start date or CAS issue date. Applications submitted before 8 April 2026 were charged at the old rate. All applications from 8 April onwards are charged at the new rate.

The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) for students remains unchanged at £776 per year. The IHS is calculated on your full visa duration and must be paid upfront.

04

Total UK student visa cost from Nepal in 2026 (in NPR)

The visa application fee is only part of the total cost. Here is the full breakdown Nepali students should budget for:

Cost ComponentAmount (GBP)Approx. NPR
Visa application fee£558~NPR 97,000
IHS (per year)£776/year~NPR 1,35,000/yr
TB test certificate—NPR 7,500–9,000
VFS service feeVariesNPR 3,000–5,000
NOC (Ministry of Education)—NPR 2,000
Priority processing (optional)£500~NPR 87,000
Super-priority (optional)£1,000~NPR 1,74,000

Total cost by course length (visa fee + IHS only, excluding TB/VFS/NOC):

CourseVisa DurationVisa FeeIHSTotal (NPR)
1-year Master's~16 months£558£1,552~NPR 3.67 lakh
2-year Master's~28 months£558£2,328~NPR 5.02 lakh
3-year Bachelor's~40 months£558£3,104~NPR 6.37 lakh

Budget carefully: The IHS must be paid in full upfront — not in installments. For a 3-year Bachelor's, that means paying approximately NPR 5.4 lakh in IHS alone before leaving Nepal.

05

VFS document process change: self-upload removed

One of the most significant changes in 2026 is the removal of the self-upload option for visa documents from Nepal.

FeatureBefore (Old System)Now (2026 System)
Document uploadStudents could self-upload onlineVFS Global uploads all documents
Physical documentsOptional at appointmentAll originals must be carried
Passport scanUploaded by studentFull scan done at VFS center
FlexibilityUpload from anywhere, anytimeMust be done at VFS appointment

This change means your VFS appointment is now the single most important step in the visa process. Missing or incorrect documents at VFS cannot be fixed later through online upload — you may need to rebook your appointment entirely.

06

How the new VFS process works step by step

  • Step 1: Complete your visa application online at gov.uk and pay the £558 visa fee + IHS upfront.
  • Step 2: Book a biometrics appointment at VFS Global Kathmandu through the VFS website using your GWF reference number.
  • Step 3: Carry all original documents physically to your VFS appointment — VFS staff will scan and upload everything on your behalf.
  • Step 4: Provide biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) at the VFS center.
  • Step 5: Wait for your visa decision — standard processing takes 3–8 weeks from the biometrics date.

Why this matters for Nepali students: Previously, many students or their consultancies uploaded documents online before the VFS appointment. That option no longer exists. Your document preparation must be 100% complete before you walk into VFS — there is no second chance to upload missing papers afterward.

Graduate Route visa changes: what's coming in 2027

The Graduate Route (post-study work visa) has been updated in two ways:

ChangeOldNew (2026/2027)
Application fee£880£937 (from April 2026)
Duration (Bachelor's/Master's)2 years18 months (from January 2027)
Duration (PhD)3 years3 years (unchanged)
Work restrictionsNoneNone (unchanged)

Important timing: If you are graduating in 2026, apply for the Graduate Route before January 2027 to secure the full 2-year duration. Applications submitted from January 2027 onward will receive only 18 months for Bachelor's and Master's graduates.

The Graduate Route still offers unrestricted work rights — any job, any employer, no sponsorship needed. After the Graduate Route period, many graduates transition to a Skilled Worker visa (general minimum salary £41,700, or £33,400 for eligible new entrants) for longer-term UK employment.

09

Updated financial requirements for UK student visa

You must prove you have enough funds to cover tuition plus living costs. The living cost thresholds for 2026:

LocationMonthly Requirement9 Months TotalApprox. NPR
London universities£1,529£13,761~NPR 23.9 lakh
Outside London£1,171£10,539~NPR 18.4 lakh

Total bank balance required = First year's tuition + 9 months' living costs. For a £15,000 course outside London: £15,000 + £10,539 = £25,539 (approximately NPR 44.4 lakh).

The 28-day rule: Your total funds must be held in a UKVI-approved Nepali bank for a minimum of 28 consecutive days. The 28-day period must end within 31 days of your visa application submission. A single day's dip below the required amount can result in visa refusal.

Smart strategy: Choosing a university outside London reduces your required bank balance by approximately NPR 5.5 lakh while still giving you a fully UK-recognized degree and the same post-study work rights.

10

How to avoid common visa mistakes under the new system

The visa process is more structured in 2026. Here are the most common mistakes Nepali students should avoid:

  • Bank balance not maintained for 28 days. Even one day's dip below the required amount can cause refusal. Set up funds well in advance and do not touch the account.
  • Using a non-UKVI-approved bank. Not all Nepali banks are accepted. Verify your bank is on the approved list before depositing funds.
  • Assuming you can self-upload documents later. Under the new VFS process, all documents must be carried physically. There is no online upload option afterward.
  • Inconsistent names across documents. Your name on the passport, CAS, bank statements, and transcripts must match exactly. Even a minor spelling difference can cause delays.
  • Expired TB test. The TB certificate is valid for 6 months. Ensure it is still valid on your visa application submission date.
  • Applying too late. Standard processing takes 3–8 weeks. Apply at least 6–8 weeks before your course start date to account for delays.
  • Budgeting only the visa fee. The £558 is just the start. Include IHS (£776/year × visa duration), TB test, VFS fees, and NOC in your financial planning.

Is the UK still a good destination for Nepali students in 2026?

Yes. Despite the fee increases and process changes, the UK remains one of the strongest study destinations for Nepali students because of its high-quality education, 1-year Master's programs (saving time and money vs other countries), strong post-study work rights through the Graduate Route, and global employer recognition of UK degrees.

However, the visa process is becoming more structured and compliance-focused. Proper planning, accurate documentation, and realistic budgeting are more important than ever.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The UK student visa fee increased from £524 to £558 (~NPR 97,000) from 8 April 2026. This is a 6.5% increase. The fee is non-refundable and applies to all applications submitted on or after 8 April, regardless of course start date. The IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge) remains unchanged at £776 per year.
The total depends on course length. For a 1-year Master's: approximately £2,110 (NPR ~3.67 lakh) including £558 visa fee + £1,552 IHS. For a 3-year Bachelor's: approximately £3,662 (NPR ~6.37 lakh) including £558 visa fee + £3,104 IHS. Additional costs include the TB test (NPR 7,500–9,000), VFS fees, and NOC (NPR 2,000).
No. The self-upload option has been removed. All supporting documents must now be submitted physically at VFS Global Kathmandu, where VFS staff scan and upload them on your behalf. You must carry all original documents to your biometrics appointment — there is no option to upload separately before or after.
The £34 increase (approximately NPR 5,900) is modest in isolation, but when combined with the IHS (£776/year paid upfront), tuition, and living expenses, it adds to an already significant financial outlay. The Graduate Route fee also increased by £57 to £937, which impacts post-graduation budgeting. Plan your total visa costs — not just the application fee — before committing.
You need your first year's tuition plus 9 months of living costs: £1,529/month for London (total £13,761) or £1,171/month outside London (total £10,539). This must be in a UKVI-approved Nepali bank for 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of your application. For example, a £15,000 course outside London requires approximately NPR 44.4 lakh.
Yes, two changes. First, the application fee increased from £880 to £937 from April 2026. Second, the duration for Bachelor's and Master's graduates will reduce from 2 years to 18 months for applications submitted from January 2027. PhD graduates retain 3 years. Students graduating in 2026 should apply before January 2027 to get the full 2-year duration.
Standard processing takes 3–8 weeks from your VFS biometrics appointment. Priority processing (£500 extra, ~NPR 87,000) gives a decision in approximately 5 working days. Super-priority (£1,000 extra, ~NPR 1,74,000) gives a decision in 1–2 working days. Apply at least 6–8 weeks before your course start date.
Yes. The UK offers 1-year Master's programs (shorter and often cheaper overall than 2-year programs elsewhere), globally recognized degrees, post-study work rights through the Graduate Route, and strong employer demand for UK graduates. The fee increase of £34 is relatively small in the context of total study costs, and the quality of education and career outcomes remain strong.
