How to Study in the UK Without IELTS from Nepal: Alternative English Proficiency Options in 2026

Many Nepali students assume that IELTS is mandatory for studying in the UK. It is not. While IELTS remains the most widely recognized English proficiency test, UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) allows licensed sponsor universities to set their own English language requirements. This means universities can — and many do — accept alternative evidence of English proficiency from Nepali students.

This guide explains every legitimate route to study in the UK without IELTS from Nepal in 2026, names specific universities that accept alternatives, and walks you through the application and visa process step by step.

UK universities that waive IELTS typically accept one or more of the following alternatives. Which option works for you depends on your academic background and the university's specific policy.

The Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate is the most common way Nepali students study in the UK without IELTS. It is a letter from your previous college or university confirming that your entire education — lectures, coursework, and examinations — was conducted in English.

Who qualifies for MOI?

• Master's applicants: If your bachelor's degree was taught entirely in English at a recognized Nepali college (TU, KU, PU, or affiliated colleges), you can obtain an MOI letter from your institution.
• Bachelor's applicants: If your Grade 11 and 12 education was in English medium under NEB, HSEB, CBSE, or A-Levels, your school can provide the MOI letter. Alternatively, 60%+ marks in Grade 12 English may be accepted directly.

What should the MOI letter include?

• Official letterhead of the institution
• Confirmation that English was the sole medium of instruction
• Duration of the English-medium program
• Name of the degree/program completed
• Signature and stamp of the registrar or principal

• Step 6 — Apply for Student Visa: Complete the online application on the UKVI website. Pay the visa fee (£524) and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS — £776/year, paid upfront). Book biometrics at VFS Global in Kathmandu.

For degree-level courses (bachelor's and above), the university's confirmation on your CAS is sufficient — you do not need to take a separate Secure English Language Test (SELT).
