Additionally, another best thing about studying in the US is the chance to get work experience after graduation through Optional Practical Training (OPT). If planned properly and capitalized on this opportunity, students like can also unlock bigger career pathways and a bright future ahead.
What is OPT?
OPT is a program for international students on an F-1 visa. It allows them to work in the US in jobs directly connected to what they studied.
There are two types:
- Pre-Completion OPT: You can work part-time while still studying.
- Post-Completion OPT: You work full-time after finishing your degree.
Most Nepali students go for Post-Completion OPT, because it gives them a chance to use their education in real jobs.
Why do OPT?
There are many reasons students choose OPT:

How Long Does OPT Last?
- Regular OPT: You can work for 12 months after graduation.
- STEM OPT: If your degree is in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subject, you can apply for a 24-month extension, making it up to 3 years total.
Examples of STEM and Non-STEM Majors
STEM Majors (eligible for extension):
- Computer Science
- Information Technology
- Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Mining, etc.)

Always double-check if your degree is on the STEM Designated Program List before applying.
