TOEFL iBT Changes Coming in January 2026
Starting in January 2026, ETS will introduce adaptive testing and a new scoring system to make the TOEFL iBT more personalized, fair and relevant for today’s test takers.
Adaptive Testing in Reading and Listening Sections
From January 2026, the TOEFL iBT Reading and Listening sections will become adaptive. This means the test will adjust to your performance level in real time. Additionally, traditional content will be supplemented with modern, equitable topics.
- It will feel shorter and more efficient, without compromising accuracy.
- Topics will be more realistic and relevant, focusing on everyday academic and campus situations.
New Scoring System
A new 1–6 score scale (aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference, or CEFR) will also be introduced.
This will make it easier to understand how your English level compares internationally.
Your new score report will include:
- A 1–6 band score (linked to CEFR levels)
- The traditional 0–120 score
ETS will also provide training and resources to help institutions adapt smoothly to the new system.
Other Key Enhancements
ETS is also making the overall test experience better with:
- New headphones in test centers for clearer sound and comfort
- More free preparation materials
- Faster score delivery — results within 72 hours
- Simpler registration for both at-home and test-center testing options
What This Means for Test Takers?
Overall, these updates make TOEFL testing smarter, faster, and more transparent, helping students showcase their English skills more accurately and efficiently.
